Wolfenstein meets Metroidvania in Wolfhound, an 8-bit ode to yesteryear with zombies and Nazi mechs

Exploring the World of Wolfhound: A Retro-Inspired Indie Game

Wolfhound has been on my radar for quite some time, appearing on both our 2025 and 2026 most anticipated lists. While an exact release date for this indie gem is still pending, signs point to a possible launch towards the end of this year. Having recently had the opportunity to play a demo build, I can confidently say that there are plenty of reasons to be excited about what Wolfhound has to offer.

Developed by indie studio Bit Kit, Wolfhound draws inspiration from classic games like Metroid and Wolfenstein. Players assume the role of Chuck Rosetti, an all-American WWII captain tasked with investigating a Bermuda island where the Nazis are conducting sinister experiments. Upon crash-landing on the island, Chuck finds himself in a meticulously designed 8-bit jungle teeming with various enemies such as zombies, killer bees, sentient slimes, and retrofuturist mechs.

Despite its 8-bit aesthetics, Wolfhound’s visual style goes beyond what the NES could achieve, drawing closer comparisons to the Sega Master System and NEC PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16. The vibrant tilesets, smooth character animations, and large enemy sprites showcase the game’s visual prowess, reminiscent of classic titles like Zeliard.

Wolfhound embodies modern Metroidvania game design, featuring interconnected levels that include the jungle, a purple mine, and the Nazi castle. Players will navigate through these areas, gradually uncovering new weapons and upgrades like tactical kneepads and gloves that enhance Chuck’s abilities, allowing for more efficient exploration.

Wolfhound’s gameplay challenges players with a difficulty level akin to titles like Hollow Knight, requiring precise movement and strategic decision-making to overcome obstacles. The game’s combat mechanics, including a unique reloading system for firearms, add depth to the gameplay experience.

During my demo playthrough, I encountered challenging platforming sections and formidable bosses, each requiring a mix of skill and strategy to overcome. While the game’s difficulty may lead to frequent “GAME OVER” screens, Wolfhound maintains a fair balance that keeps players engaged.

As a work-in-progress title, Wolfhound shows promise but also has areas for improvement. The reloading mechanic, while innovative, may require adjustment for players, especially when using heavier weapons. Additionally, the absence of a grenade trajectory indicator could lead to accidental misfires, adding an element of challenge to combat encounters.

Overall, my time with Wolfhound evoked nostalgic memories of classic gaming experiences, offering a blend of challenging gameplay and retro-inspired visuals. If you’re a fan of 2D action-adventure games and enjoy a good challenge, Wolfhound is definitely worth keeping an eye on as it nears release.
