Microsoft boosts AI team with former Ai2 CEO and top researchers
Microsoft Recruits Top AI Researchers from Allen Institute for AI and University of Washington
Microsoft has made a strategic move by hiring a group of distinguished AI researchers from the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle and the University of Washington. Notably, former Ai2 CEO Ali Farhadi, Hanna Hajishirzi, and Ranjay Krishna are among the key researchers joining Microsoft’s team, while retaining their positions at the UW’s Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. Sophie Lebrecht, former Ai2 COO, is also part of this talented group.
This recruitment drive follows Ali Farhadi’s recent departure from Ai2, where he served as CEO for over two and a half years. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, has shifted his focus towards leading Microsoft’s Superintelligence team, a move that underlines the company’s commitment to cutting-edge AI research and development.
As part of its strategic vision, Microsoft aims to reduce its reliance on OpenAI for advanced AI models, placing it in direct competition with tech giants like Amazon and Google. By bringing researchers from Ai2 and UW on board, Microsoft gains expertise in open-source model development and training efficiency, areas where Ai2 has excelled.
Notable Departures from Ai2 and Funding Realities
The departure of Farhadi, Hajishirzi, and Krishna signifies a significant loss for Ai2, founded by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Hajishirzi’s involvement in the OLMo project and a partnership with the NSF and Nvidia for open AI models highlights the impact of these departures on Ai2’s research initiatives.
The evolving funding landscape at Ai2, with a shift towards real-world applications of AI, has also influenced these departures. While Ai2’s programs for 2026 are fully funded, the Fund for Science and Technology (FFST) is transitioning to a proposal-based funding model, favoring applied AI over frontier model development.
Farhadi, Hajishirzi, and Krishna, renowned for their work in AI model advancement, find a new home at Microsoft’s Superintelligence team. With substantial compute resources and a clear mandate, Microsoft offers them the platform to scale their research and development efforts significantly.
Implications and Future Outlook
Microsoft’s recruitment of these top AI researchers marks a significant step in the company’s AI strategy. The addition of talent from Ai2 and UW strengthens Microsoft’s position in the AI landscape, enabling it to drive innovation and create impactful AI solutions for various industries.
Looking ahead, the collaboration between Microsoft and these research pioneers is poised to reshape the future of AI, focusing on humanist superintelligence and the ethical deployment of AI technologies for the betterment of society.
