Embracing Google Gemini: A New Perspective After The Lights Went Out
Currently, my home office carpet is sprinkled with bicarbonate of soda. After blotting it with paper towels and applying warm, soapy water, I plan to vacuum it up soon, hoping it will return to its original state. (Update: it did.)
You might be wondering why I’m sharing this mundane detail. No, I haven’t suddenly turned into a scientist conducting strange experiments while working.
The reason behind this carpet-cleaning frenzy is a mishap that occurred earlier today. In a clumsy moment, I accidentally knocked over my bergamot oil diffuser, causing essential oils to spill on the carpet.
This led to a moment of panic as I scrambled to find a solution. Admittedly, my cleaning skills are not extraordinary, unlike those of Iwan from Sort Your Life Out.
The quickest remedy seemed to be seeking advice from Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, so that’s exactly what I did.

It may seem unusual to take advice from a chatbot known for hallucinations, but Gemini has proven itself in the realm of stain removal. A while back, I encountered a stubborn stain on my sofa that had resisted all my previous cleaning attempts using upholstery cleaner.
I wouldn’t exactly put my cleaning abilities on par with Iwan from Sort Your Life Out
So, I snapped a quick photo of the lime green fabric and sought guidance from Gemini. In a matter of seconds, it provided a simple five-step cleaning process similar to the one I previously mentioned: blot, dish soap, bicarb, vacuum. The results were impressive.

These instances are just a few among many where Google’s assistant, Gemini, has come to my rescue. While traditional web searches are an option, the convenience of Gemini’s quick solutions in times of need is unparalleled.
Despite my initial skepticism towards AI, using Gemini as a problem-solving assistant on a near-daily basis has been a pleasant surprise. However, it wasn’t until a more serious situation arose about a month ago that my perspective on it changed.
No Power? No Panic
In today’s technology-driven world, a power outage can have significant repercussions. Electricity is a cornerstone of our daily routines, so losing power at home is a major setback.
This harsh reality hit home a few weeks back when we discovered that only certain lights were functioning at my parents’ house. As we tried to diagnose the issue, the power suddenly went out completely.
Naturally, swearing and panic ensued. A dark, cold home without refrigeration is a nightmare scenario.
A freezing, dark home with no way of keeping food cold is the stuff of nightmares
To compound matters, my parents had recently moved in, and this was the first hiccup with the complex, outdated electrical system. With no local power outage or visible blown fuses, we faced the prospect of an expensive emergency call-out on a Sunday.
Desperate for an alternative solution, I turned to Gemini for guidance. While I had used it for simple household tasks, this was by far the most high-stakes scenario. In a matter of seconds, after sending a photo of the consumer unit, Gemini provided a straightforward, step-by-step approach to identify and resolve the issue.

While not a guaranteed solution, Gemini’s advice helped calm our panicked minds and focus on resolving the issue. Ultimately, a simple bulb replacement and adjustment of some switches did the trick.
While Gemini didn’t directly provide the solution in this case (we stumbled upon it while trying one of its other suggestions), without its guidance, we might not have attempted to tackle the problem ourselves. This could have led to a costly bill and hours of stress on a Sunday.
An Invaluable Home Helper
I won’t delve into every scenario where Gemini proved helpful in recent months, as that would likely be tedious to read.
One area where Gemini has been exceptionally useful is in handling simple tasks around the house. During the depths of winter, when my living room radiator was barely warming up, Gemini guided me in fixing the loose valve, restoring it to optimal heating efficiency.
Deciphering the cryptic symbols on bowls, pans, and my finicky countertop dishwasher? Gemini to the rescue.

Embarking on my gardening journey and determining the ideal spot for a bird table? Google’s AI cleared the confusion and provided clarity (though the bird seed remains untouched after four days, so maybe it’s not foolproof).
Oh, and it prevented me from using human shampoo on my dog’s muddy fur, which can lead to severe irritation and skin damage. My mistake on that one.
An Important Word of Warning
Despite the multitude of helpful tips from Gemini in recent months, I remain cautious about blindly following its advice. This cautious approach is essential.
Although major errors are rare in today’s AI landscape, Google’s AI is not infallible and can still provide incorrect or misleading information. I only consider implementing suggestions with minimal risk of long-term damage. Even then, I carefully assess which recommendations are worth adopting and which should be dismissed.
In the AI era, critical thinking is more crucial than ever
As AI continues to permeate various aspects of our lives, this level of scrutiny is imperative. Blindly accepting AI suggestions or using it as a substitute for thorough research practices is unwise.
I maintain a discerning approach to AI utilization in my journalism. I refrain from relying on it to write articles and prefer to cross-reference information from multiple sources before forming my own conclusions. In the age of AI, critical thinking is paramount.
