Google is experimenting with a new AI-driven search experience on YouTube, aimed at creating a more conversational search process. This new feature is currently being tested and offers users a unique way to interact with the platform. It includes pulling in a variety of content such as longform videos, YouTube Shorts, and text-based information related to the search query.

This experimental feature is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the US who are 18 years or older. By enabling this feature, users will notice an “Ask YouTube” button in the search bar, prompting them to ask specific questions or search for particular topics.

When using the “Ask YouTube” feature, users will experience a brief loading period before the search results are displayed. This process involves presenting text-based information, video content, and related search queries to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic being searched for.

For example, a search for “short history of the Apollo 11 moon landing” yields detailed information about the mission, including key milestones and video content relevant to the topic. The search results are categorized under different sections, making it easier for users to navigate through the content.

Users can also ask follow-up questions or initiate new searches using the text box provided on the search results page. This allows for a seamless search experience and encourages further exploration of the topic at hand.

To further explore the capabilities of the AI search feature, a test was conducted using a familiar topic – Valve’s Steam Controller. By asking “What is the Steam Controller,” detailed information about the controller, related videos, and reviews were provided in the search results.

While the majority of the information presented was accurate, a minor factual error was identified regarding the features of the discontinued Steam Controller. This serves as a reminder to users that despite the convenience of AI-generated search results, fact-checking remains essential for ensuring accuracy.
