Omoda 5 hybrid and Omoda 7 PHEV SUVs on the cards for Australia

Chery, the Chinese automaker, has unveiled its next-generation Omoda 5 and Omoda 7 SUV models in China, set to go into production in 2026. These new SUVs may potentially join the existing Chery lineup in Australia, expanding the brand’s offerings in the country.

The Omoda 5 is already available in Australia in both petrol and electric versions, known as the Chery C5 and E5 respectively. Now, Chery has introduced a hybrid version of the Omoda 5 in China, hinting at a possible Australian release under the Omoda brand.

CarExpert reports that the Chery C5 and E5 will continue to be sold under the Chery name in Australia, while the new hybrid model could be badged as the Omoda 5. This move signifies Chery’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Australian market.

Omoda Jaecoo, a separate brand launched by Chery earlier this year in Australia, introduced the Omoda 9 large SUV in August. The Omoda 9 features a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system with three electric motors, a hybrid transmission, and a petrol engine, delivering impressive power output and acceleration.

The Omoda 5 hybrid, on the other hand, will feature a series-parallel setup, differentiating it from a PHEV like the Omoda 9. This setup is similar to the existing Toyota RAV4 hybrid, offering a balance between fuel efficiency and performance.

The Omoda 7, positioned between the Omoda 5 and 9 in terms of size and price, will feature an ‘SHS-H’ powertrain, providing ample power and torque for a smooth driving experience. The Omoda 7’s design is based on a stretched version of the Omoda 5’s platform, promising a blend of style and functionality.

In terms of technology, the Omoda 7 boasts a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen that can be adjusted for driver or passenger use, along with luxurious leather seats for a premium cabin experience. The SUV lineup also includes the Omoda 4, a compact SUV that offers a mix of style and practicality.

As Chery prepares for the global rollout of these new models in 2026, more details are expected to be revealed closer to the launch date. The Omoda lineup is poised to make a significant impact in the Australian market, offering consumers a range of innovative and efficient SUV options.
