Meta Introduces AI Bone Structure Analysis to Detect Underage Users on Facebook and Instagram

In a recent blog post, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced the implementation of a new AI system aimed at identifying and removing users under the age of 13 from its platforms. This system utilizes advanced technology to scan photos and videos for various visual cues, including height and bone structure, without relying on facial recognition.

Meta emphasizes that the AI bone structure analysis does not involve facial recognition or the identification of specific individuals in images. Instead, it focuses on detecting general themes and contextual clues that may indicate underage users. By analyzing posts, comments, bios, and captions, the system aims to keep children under 13 off the platforms.

The facial analysis technology, currently available in select countries such as the US, is part of Meta’s efforts to enhance age verification measures. Accounts identified as belonging to underage users will be deactivated, requiring the account owner to verify their age to prevent deletion.

Furthermore, Meta is expanding its technology on Instagram to automatically classify users aged 13 to 17 into Teen Accounts. These accounts feature stricter content controls, block messages from strangers, and restrict users under 16 from livestreaming. Initially introduced on Instagram, this technology will soon be implemented on Facebook for US users, with plans for a rollout in the UK and EU in June.
