Is Chrome’s AI draining 4GB of your computer’s storage space?
Google Chrome’s On-Device AI Model Consuming Unexpected Storage Space
Google Chrome users may find their device storage being eaten up by a large AI model file without their knowledge. The culprit is a 4GB weights.bin file associated with Google’s Gemini Nano AI model, which is automatically downloaded to Chrome’s system folders when certain AI features are activated. This file is essential for powering Chrome’s AI tools such as scam detection, autofill, writing assistance, and suggestion features.
The Gemini Nano AI model operates locally, meaning it relies on training parameters stored on the user’s device instead of fetching data from cloud-based models. While this setup offers privacy advantages, it poses a problem for users with limited storage capacity, especially since Chrome fails to clearly communicate the file size requirements.
Users who have enabled certain Gemini AI features on Chrome are likely to have the 4GB weights.bin file already present on their system. To confirm, users can navigate to their Chrome data folders and look for the file in the OptGuideOnDeviceModel directory.
Deleting the weights.bin file won’t solve the storage issue permanently, as Chrome may redownload it if AI features remain enabled. To prevent this, users should disable the On-Device AI option in Settings > System to remove the features associated with the file.
Google acknowledges that the size of Gemini Nano may change with browser updates, but this information is buried in a comprehensive guide rather than being upfront when enabling AI features in Chrome. Clearer communication from Google regarding storage requirements could have prevented confusion. We have contacted Google for further clarification on this matter.
