European Expansion: iPhone Carrier Location Privacy Enhancements
With the release of iOS 26.3 a few months ago, Apple introduced a new feature aimed at enhancing iPhone users’ privacy. This feature allows users to reduce the precision of location data shared with cellular networks. Initially limited to select iPhone models and specific mobile service providers, this feature has now been expanded with the launch of iOS 26.5.
The highlight of iOS 26.5 is the introduction of end-to-end RCS encryption, a significant privacy enhancement. However, the availability of carrier location privacy remains limited.
While RCS encryption is compatible with any iPhone running iOS 26.5 and supported by 35 carriers in North America, the Limit Precise Location feature is exclusive to iPhones equipped with Apple’s C-series 5G modem chips, such as iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e, and the cellular version of the M5 iPad Pro.
Apple’s decision to restrict this feature to devices with its own modem chips is likely due to specific capabilities of their silicon that Qualcomm’s chips lack. Initially, only six carriers worldwide supported this feature, including Boost Mobile, EE, BT, Telekom Germany, AIS, and True. However, additional carriers like Sky, YouSee, and A1 have joined the list.
Despite expectations for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models to feature a newer “C2” modem, the chip requirements remain unchanged for now. Apple has also extended near-universal compatibility for European iPhone users, allowing those with a SIM from any carrier in the European Union or the UK to enable the Limit Precise Location feature.
Apple specifies that the feature requires the latest version of iOS and notes that carriers listed in the support document have the feature enabled by default. This feature significantly reduces the reported location to a broader radius, making it challenging to pinpoint a user to anything smaller than a neighborhood.
Understanding the Limit Precise Location Feature
The Limit Precise Location feature is designed to minimize the accuracy of location tracking by cellular towers. This feature, unique to Apple’s C-series modem chips, ensures that only a less precise location, like a neighborhood, is shared with cellular networks. It does not impact signal quality or user experience and allows emergency responders to receive accurate information during emergencies.
While the feature is effective against cellular tower tracking, users must still manage other privacy settings to prevent location tracking by installed apps on their iPhones.
If you own a compatible iPhone model and carrier, you can access the Limit Precise Location option in Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options.
