The iPhone 17 Pro has taken a significant leap in the world of sports broadcasting. After its debut capturing live MLB game footage at Fenway Park last year, it is now set to lead the line in capturing an entire MLS matchup on Saturday, May 23.

Previously, the iPhone 17 Pro was used to supplement larger studio camera setups during a Friday Night Baseball game at Fenway Park. However, this weekend, during the LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match, the entirety of the MLS game will be captured exclusively by the three 48 MP Fusion cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple has announced that this will be the first time an iPhone is used to capture the entirety of a major professional live sporting event broadcast. For this MLS match at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, Apple plans to deploy 15 iPhone 17 Pro devices to provide viewers with pristine video quality and dynamic new perspectives.

The iPhone 17 Pro will capture live footage throughout the match, including team warmups, player introductions, in-net goal angles, and the stadium atmosphere. The broadcast will offer high-quality video and unique perspectives, thanks to the small form factor of the iPhone.

This match presents an ideal opportunity for Apple to showcase the capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro, particularly in areas where most consumers may not be aware of its full potential. The device’s pro-level video features, such as Apple Log 2, will be utilized for this broadcast, along with the Fusion camera system that provides the equivalent of eight lenses.

One key feature of the iPhone 17 Pro is Apple Log 2, which offers high dynamic range to capture details across various lighting conditions. The device will also leverage post-processing and professional color grading to enhance the video quality for viewers. Additionally, features like Genlock support will ensure seamless synchronization between devices for smooth camera angle transitions.

While Apple’s approach may not be fundamentally different from traditional sports camera rigs, it represents the company’s implementation of industry standards on the iPhone 17 Pro. This weekend’s MLS game will be a great opportunity to witness the device in action, showcasing its advanced features and capabilities.

For those interested in watching the game, Apple TV subscribers can stream the entire 2026 MLS season at no extra cost, including the LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match airing live on Apple TV at 7:30 p.m. PT this Saturday.
