Amazon Prime Air to Expand Drone Delivery Service to Nearly 500 Cities and Towns in the US

Amazon has announced plans to significantly expand its drone delivery service, Prime Air, to “nearly 500 cities and towns in the United States” by the end of this year. This expansion will increase the service’s coverage by six times compared to its current footprint.

New Prime Air Locations

The new Prime Air delivery locations include Chicago, Illinois; Syracuse, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia; and Boise, Idaho metro areas. Amazon has also hinted at launching the service in more communities later this year.

Current Prime Air Operations

Amazon already offers drone deliveries in 11 locations across the US, with each Prime Air site covering an area of approximately 175 square miles. The service is designed to deliver packages weighing up to 5 pounds quickly, with most orders arriving within 60 minutes after checkout.

Emphasis on Drone Safety

Amazon has reiterated its commitment to drone safety, highlighting Prime Air’s “industry-leading Detect-and-Avoid system.” This safety feature aims to address concerns raised by communities where the service is expanding, as Amazon’s drones have faced scrutiny for incidents such as crashing into cranes, internet cables, gardens, and even an apartment building.
