Microsoft’s consumer marketing chief to leave next year

Long-Time Microsoft Executive Yusuf Mehdi Announces Departure

After a remarkable 35-year career at Microsoft, Yusuf Mehdi, the executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer, has revealed his plans to leave the tech giant next year. The news was shared in an internal memo where Mehdi expressed his dedication to ensuring a smooth transition for the team and emphasized his commitment to the ongoing success of Microsoft’s marketing strategies, particularly for Windows, Copilot, and the Microsoft 365 consumer business until 2027.

Mehdi’s decision to step down comes at a crucial juncture for Microsoft, as the company continues to evolve its offerings to meet the changing needs of customers. According to GeekWire, Mehdi is currently collaborating with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and chief marketing officer Takeshi Numoto on a transition plan. However, his successor has not yet been named. Mehdi joins a growing list of veteran executives who have recently announced their departure from the company.

Rajesh Jha’s Retirement Triggers Management Changes

In March, Rajesh Jha, former executive vice president of Microsoft’s experiences and devices group, announced his retirement after more than three decades with the company. Jha’s decision has led to a restructuring of Microsoft’s upper management, particularly in areas such as Windows, Office, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and more.

A Legacy of Innovation and Leadership

Mehdi’s journey at Microsoft began in the ’90s as an intern, a path familiar to many long-time employees of the company. Over the years, he played a pivotal role in key projects such as the launch of Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, as well as the marketing of Internet Explorer. Mehdi also spearheaded initiatives in Microsoft’s search and online businesses, including the launch of Bing. His contributions extended to the successful launches of Xbox One, Windows 10, and Copilot Plus PCs, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in Microsoft’s consumer-focused endeavors.
