Reviving the Nissan Skyline in Australia: The Return of the Manual Transmission
The Nissan Skyline’s Potential Return to Australia with Manual Transmission
Speculations are rife that the iconic Nissan Skyline may soon make a comeback in Australia, this time with a renewed focus on enthusiasts and a potential manual transmission option. Steve Milette, the managing director of Nissan Australia, hinted at the possibility of the next-generation Skyline gracing local showrooms during the launch event of Australia’s first Nismo Performance Centre. While not a definitive confirmation, this news has certainly piqued the interest of automotive enthusiasts.
The Skyline name has been absent from the Australian market since the early 1990s, with the locally produced R31 marking the end of its mainstream presence. Only a limited number of R32 GT-Rs were officially introduced before the badge disappeared entirely. Subsequent generations continued under the Infiniti branding, but the true essence of the Skyline was never fully revived.
However, that narrative might be on the brink of a significant change. Teaser images of the anticipated 14th-generation model showcase familiar design elements, notably the iconic circular taillights, blended with a more contemporary and sharper aesthetic. This upcoming iteration is set to carve its path with a modern identity, steering away from a nostalgic throwback.
Anticipated to retain its rear-wheel drive configuration, the new Skyline could house a variant of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine seen in the Nissan Z lineup. With power output speculated to exceed 400 horsepower, it is poised to fill the gap between the Nissan Z and the forthcoming generation of the GT-R, promising an exhilarating driving experience.
