Gemini for Google Home can now use your cameras to trigger automations

Google Home Introduces New Gemini-Powered Automation Feature

Google Home has recently unveiled a new automation feature that leverages Gemini technology to enable smart home routines based on live feed from security cameras. This innovative update, among several others, was officially announced for Gemini for Home, following its initial release in October.

Enhanced Visual Insights for Smart Home Automation

According to Google’s statement, this latest feature allows users to create automations that are triggered by visual cues captured by their cameras. By empowering cameras to interpret their surroundings, smart homes can now autonomously respond to a wide range of scenarios within the household.

Compatibility and Requirements

The new feature currently supports Nest cameras and select third-party cameras with “Gemini Built-In” functionality. Presently, it is only accessible in English for US users participating in the Google Home Public Preview program. To utilize this capability, users must activate AI descriptions for their cameras through “Gemini for Home camera features” and subscribe to the Google Home Premium Advanced plan.

Setting Up the Feature

Google suggests a straightforward process for configuring the feature. Users can describe the specific event they want to trigger an automation for using natural language and select the cameras that should monitor it. It is important to note that the camera requires a brief processing time to analyze the visual information, hence it is not recommended for instant alerts, time-sensitive situations, or security purposes.

Practical Applications

Users can employ this feature for various scenarios, such as detecting wildlife near trash bins to activate security lighting or receiving notifications when mail is delivered. Additionally, users can instruct the system to recognize specific objects or individuals and trigger corresponding routines, such as adjusting smart home devices.

Gemini for Home now enables users to execute multiple actions with a single voice command, enhancing convenience and efficiency. The voice assistant responds promptly and delivers consistent results, offering a seamless user experience for controlling smart home devices through natural language commands.
