A year on from its launch, former Blizzard devs' Wildgate only has one last update left, but it's not shutting down

The End of Wildgate: A Farewell to a Sci-Fi Shooter

Almost a year after its launch, the sci-fi shooter Wildgate, led by Starcraft 2 lead designer Dustin Browder, is nearing its final chapter. While this may sound somber to some, the upcoming last update brings a mix of closure and optimism to the game’s loyal players.

In a recent Steam blog post, Browder announced that the next Wildgate update, scheduled for next month, will mark the end of new content “for a while.” Despite efforts to attract a larger player base, the game has not garnered enough traction to sustain continuous development. However, Wildgate will remain playable, with occasional updates focusing on bug fixes, balance adjustments, and small events to keep the community engaged. A dedicated team will monitor the servers to ensure the game’s stability.

The future of Wildgate appears to be customizable, with the introduction of custom games allowing players to create unique game modes. Additionally, a one-year anniversary celebration is planned, featuring new items such as sprays and titles. The mode selection will undergo a revamp for better clarity, and seasonal events will continue to rotate as usual.

Despite the game winding down, Browder reassured that there are no layoffs planned at Moonshot Games. Instead, the team will shift focus to research and development projects, hinting at exciting ventures on the horizon. This transition signals a positive outlook amidst the game’s conclusion. Wildgate is currently available on Steam at a discounted price, inviting new players to experience the game before its final update.
