Navigating the Minefield: Robert Yang’s Quest to Bring LGBTQ+ Games to Steam
Radiator Forever: A Collection of Robert Yang’s Gay Games Lands on Steam
Robert Yang, a well-known developer, has recently released “Radiator Forever” on Steam, a collection of his short and experimental gay games. This ongoing re-remaster/re-re-release is now available on Steam and Itch.io, providing a new platform for these unique creations. In a recent blog post, Yang discussed the challenges faced by adult game creators in today’s landscape, highlighting issues with payment processors and UK laws that make it difficult for games like Radiator Forever to thrive on mainstream PC platforms.
Yang, who is also known for his work in tracking down Dark Souls 2 hackers, has been creating short-form gay games for years. Radiator Forever brings together several of his projects, making them easier to update and expand in the future. While the collection can be found on Itch.io and Steam, accessing it on the latter platform requires users to be logged in and, for UK users, have a valid credit card on file for age verification. Yang mentioned that the Steam listing is not easily discoverable through search and is even geoblocked in certain countries.
Explaining his decision to bring the games to Steam in addition to Itch, Yang discussed the current challenges faced by creators in the adult gaming space. He mentioned the impact of Collective Shout/Visa/Mastercard/Stripe’s anti-sexuality censorship campaign in 2025, which led Itch.io to delist many NSFW games to avoid losing access to online payment processing. Additionally, UK’s Online Safety Act has forced Itch.io to geoblock the UK, rather than comply with strict and costly regulations. Despite his support for Itch.io, Yang acknowledged that the platform has a smaller reach compared to Steam, prompting him to release Radiator Forever on the latter.
Valve has tagged Radiator Forever as containing “frequent nudity and sexual content,” a classification that Yang believes limits the game’s visibility on Steam. While he made efforts to avoid explicit nudity, he feels that the game’s overall theme was deemed too “gay” by Steam’s content reviewers. Yang also pointed out a perceived double standard in how freedom of expression is treated in games from indie developers versus big publishers, citing examples like Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3.
Aside from updates to individual games, the re-remastered collection of Radiator Forever includes a completion percentage tracker for each segment and a new tag to indicate when new content has been added. These enhancements aim to enhance the player experience and provide clearer signals of updates within the collection.
