Shift in the Mobile Gaming Landscape: Exploring the Decline in Revenue
During the second quarter of 2026, non-gaming apps played a significant role in driving mobile spending growth on both Android and iOS platforms globally. This growth contrasted with a decline in gaming revenue, as highlighted in a recent report by Sensor Tower.
The Q2 2026 Digital Market Index report by Sensor Tower sheds light on the changes in mobile app spending and downloads during the quarter. Non-gaming apps saw a 14.6% year-over-year increase in revenue, reaching $24.4 billion, while gaming revenue experienced a 4.5% decline, totaling $19.2 billion.
Apple had hinted at these trends during its fiscal Q3 2026 earnings call, attributing a part of its Services revenue slowdown to weaker performance in mobile gaming and regulatory changes affecting the App Store business model.
The report also revealed that in-app purchase revenue in the US dropped by 3% year-over-year but remained the highest globally at $14.8 billion. China followed with $5.98 billion in revenue, showing a 10% growth.
India maintained its lead in app downloads with 6.67 billion installs, while the US and Brazil secured the second and third positions, respectively. The top revenue-generating app category was Generative AI, with a notable 108% year-over-year surge.
ChatGPT dominated this category with a 60% revenue share, while other competitors like Claude, Grok, and Gemini also experienced rapid growth. Notably, Claude rose from the 7th position in 2025 to the 2nd spot globally in Q2 2026.
Despite global declines in the Dating & Social Discovery category, Latin American markets, especially Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, showed significant revenue growth.
ChatGPT emerged as the most downloaded app globally in Q2 2026, followed by TikTok and Instagram. In terms of in-app purchase revenue, TikTok, ChatGPT, and Google One led the charts. Noteworthy mentions go to Claude for its remarkable growth and PineDrama for a substantial increase in download numbers.
While the Apple App Store continued to lead in revenue volume, Google Play exhibited stronger growth momentum during the quarter. Puzzle games, particularly arrow puzzle titles like Arrows Puzzle Escape and Arrows GO!, defied the gaming downloads contraction by achieving positive growth.
Developers are encouraged not to overlook the Google Play ecosystem, especially as non-gaming subscription adoption continues to rise. For more insights, refer to Sensor Tower’s comprehensive Q2 2026 Digital Market Index report.
