Unicorn in 48 Hours: The Rapid Rise of AI Accounting Startup Rillet’s $100M Funding Round
Rillet: The AI-Native Accounting Platform Disrupting the Industry
Rillet co-founder and CEO, Nicolas Kopp, exudes confidence as he discusses the company’s recent $100 million raise at a $1 billion valuation. The demand for accountants in the U.S. has surged, propelling growth for Rillet’s AI-native accounting platform. In just 48 hours, the company secured the funding without actively seeking it.
Emerging from stealth mode two years ago, Rillet has already raised $200 million from prominent investors like Iconiq, Andreessen Horowitz, and Sequoia. With 600 customers onboard, many of whom are transitioning from legacy systems such as Oracle and NetSuite, Rillet is making waves in the industry.
During a recent board meeting, Rillet showcased its impressive growth since the $70 million Series B funding last summer. The company’s annualized revenue rate doubled in the last quarter, attracting new clients, including public companies, and forming a strategic alliance with EY to introduce AI tools to auditing processes.
Rillet’s customers are not just testing the platform; they are actively replacing ERP and accounting software from competitors like Intuit, NetSuite, and Oracle.
The rapid rise of Rillet to unicorn status caught many by surprise, including Seth Pierrepont, the general partner at Iconiq. Pierrepont emphasized that Rillet’s ability to compete with long-standing incumbents in the industry made investing in the Series C round an easy decision.
Julien Bek, Sequoia’s lead investor in the deal, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Rillet’s potential to revolutionize the finance function beyond accounting. With a strong foundation established in previous funding rounds, reinvesting in Rillet was a logical choice for Sequoia.
Rillet represents a new wave of AI-native startups challenging traditional players in the market. Kopp emphasizes that AI technology offers compelling alternatives to customers, driving the need for innovation.
One key aspect of Rillet’s approach is designing the platform for AI agents, enabling human collaboration in corporate bookkeeping. From laundromats to major sports franchises, Rillet caters to a diverse range of clients, with a significant proportion transitioning from established software providers.
Security is a top priority for Rillet, especially when handling sensitive client data. The platform incorporates model routing to allow customers to choose their preferred foundational model, ensuring data privacy and security.

Rillet’s AI agents possess memory and can execute multi-step workflows over extended periods, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. The platform recently introduced a governance feature allowing accountants to audit every decision made by the AI agents, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Looking ahead, Kopp envisions a future where AI technology complements and empowers accounting professionals, rather than replacing them. Despite concerns about job displacement, Kopp believes that AI will enhance accountants’ advisory and analytical roles, making their expertise more valuable.
As the accounting industry evolves, regulations around AI usage are expected to adapt. Kopp remains optimistic that new rules will align with technological advancements, fostering a collaborative environment between humans and AI.
With projections indicating a growing demand for accountants and the automation of routine tasks, the role of accountants is poised to evolve, focusing more on strategic decision-making and analysis.
Rillet’s journey exemplifies the transformative potential of AI in reshaping traditional industries. By leveraging AI technology, Rillet is at the forefront of reinventing finance functions and driving innovation in the accounting sector.
