Union Rally Marks Beginning of Final Hearing in Rockstar and Fired GTA Devs’ Legal Battle
The Legal Battle Between Former Rockstar Workers and GTA 6 Studio
An important legal battle is set to begin this week between a group of former Rockstar workers and the GTA 6 studio. The final hearing, scheduled to start on September 10th, stems from the studio’s decision to fire the workers last year. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), representing the fired staff, is organizing a rally on the opening day of the hearing.
The Background
In November last year, 34 former Rockstar staffers were terminated, allegedly due to discussions about a new company Slack policy in a union-run Discord server. Rockstar claimed that the staff leaked confidential information on a public forum, while the IWGB accused Rockstar of union busting. In June, an employment tribunal ruled that the fired developers could bring claims of blacklisting against Rockstar during the final hearing.
The Hearing Details
The hearing will take place from September 10th to at least October 15th at Glasgow Tribunals Centre. The IWGB plans to hold a rally outside the venue at 8:30 AM on the opening day. Former Rockstar staffer Jason Lewis expressed his sentiments in a union press release, highlighting the emotional impact of losing their jobs and community.
The Call for Support
The fired developers are urging supporters to purchase specially-designed union merchandise to contribute to the group’s “Fighting Fund” instead of boycotting GTA 6. Meanwhile, the Rockstar Games Workers Union, formed by remaining Rockstar devs and the IWGB, seeks recognition from the company before the console release of GTA 6 on November 19th.
