Lidl Implements Cab-Less Autonomous Electric Truck for Store Deliveries in Germany

Lidl has recently introduced an autonomous electric truck without a cab for its daily store deliveries in Germany. The truck, provided by Swedish company Einride, operates at SAE Level 4 under the approval of Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority.

This innovative vehicle navigates a replenishment route between Lidl’s Edermünde distribution center and a nearby store, autonomously carrying out deliveries without a driver or safety operator on board. This marks a significant milestone in autonomous logistics in Germany.

Autonomous Truck Enhances Daily Replenishment Operations

Equipped to transport 15 Euro pallets, the truck can complete up to three trips daily, covering all dry-goods deliveries on the designated route during the initial four-month project phase. Thomas Dangelmayer, Lidl Germany’s head of operational logistics, highlighted the importance of this technological advancement in real-world operations.

The initiative serves as a testing ground for integrating autonomous transport into Lidl’s existing logistics framework. Germany’s Framework for Level 4 Freight Operations

Germany’s regulatory environment allows for the operation of Level 4 autonomous vehicles on public roads within approved operating areas. The Autonomous Driving Act, effective since July 2021, provides a legal framework for the deployment of autonomous vehicles beyond trial phases.

Under this framework, autonomous vehicles must adhere to specified operating conditions and maintain human technical supervision even in the absence of a physical driver. The KBA approves vehicles with autonomous functions, while state authorities oversee the designated operating areas.

Einride’s autonomous driving stack utilizes machine-learning-based navigation and advanced safety measures to ensure reliable and secure operations. The system undergoes rigorous testing before deployment, incorporating a redundant sensor suite and comprehensive validation processes.
