Despite the increased price of the budget-friendly MacBook Neo by Apple, the education sector continues to show a strong interest in the latest entry-level laptop from the tech giant. The rise in memory prices has affected the affordability of Chromebooks as well, prompting a Texas school district to make a significant shift in its technology procurement strategy.

The Beaumont Independent School District, as reported by Beaumont Enterprise and AppleInsider, recently approved a four-year lease of approximately $11.19 million to replace its outdated computing devices with iPads and MacBooks. The plan involves acquiring 14,585 Apple devices for teachers and students spanning from pre-K to 12th grade, with the cost distributed evenly over the lease period, amounting to around $2.8 million annually.

The decision to switch to Apple devices stems from the escalating support costs associated with maintaining the district’s existing hardware. In the 2025–26 school year alone, the district spent nearly half a million dollars on device repairs, IT staff time, and overtime for support services.

Rachel Harrah, the district’s deputy superintendent of organizational effectiveness, highlighted the challenges posed by aging Chromebooks, with a significant portion of the fleet rendered unusable due to technical issues and expensive repairs. In light of these considerations, the district recognized the superior reliability and longevity of Apple products, which align better with preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce.

In evaluating the options available, the board compared the cost-effectiveness, performance, and durability of different devices, ultimately choosing the MacBook Neo over Lenovo and Asus models for its students. The favorable financing terms offered by Apple, coupled with the device’s performance and reliability, influenced the decision to lease iPads for younger students and MacBook Neo laptops for older students and teachers.

The MacBook Neo’s higher residual value, efficient maintenance through AppleCare+, and the ability for the district’s IT department to conduct in-house repairs further reinforced its appeal. The potential for student involvement in a technology support program and collaboration with Lamar University for teacher certification in the Apple Learning Coach program added value to the overall technology integration strategy.
