Guided Vision Launches AI-Powered Description Feature in Gemini Live for Android

Today, Guided Vision introduces a groundbreaking feature in Gemini Live for compatible Android devices. This new functionality utilizes artificial intelligence to provide real-time audio descriptions of objects captured by the device’s camera. By simply pointing your phone at an object and sharing the camera feed in Gemini Live, Google’s AI technology can assist with tasks such as reading small text, describing surroundings, identifying objects, and providing detailed descriptions.

Enhancing Accessibility for Vision-Impaired Users

Similar to Apple’s VoiceOver Live Recognition feature on the iPhone and Vision Pro, Guided Vision in Gemini Live is specifically designed to cater to individuals who are blind, have low vision, or require assistance in certain situations. Apart from the Gemini app, users can also access Guided Vision through Google TalkBack or set up an accessibility shortcut in the Settings app on Android devices running version 9 and above, following its recent integration in a set of Pixel updates.

Interactive Functionality and Limitations

One of the key features of Guided Vision is the ability to ask follow-up questions related to the objects being viewed. For instance, users can request Gemini to read out the expiration date of a product it helped them locate. Additionally, Google ensures a seamless user experience by providing audio cues to assist in aligning the camera when the requested object is not within the frame. However, it is important to note that Guided Vision should not be relied upon for tasks such as navigation, safe-travel guidance, or obstacle detection, and should not be viewed as a substitute for traditional mobility aids like canes.
