Chrome will now show a warning before you visit ‘suspicious’ sites

Google Introduces New Browser Safety Feature for Chrome

Google has announced the launch of a new browser safety feature for Chrome that is designed to provide users with more information about the potential malicious nature of a website before they visit it. This feature aims to enhance user security and protect them from potential online threats.

Enhanced Protection for Chrome Users

The new safety feature, called Enhanced Protection, includes suspicious site warnings that will alert users if a website is deemed to have suspicious qualities associated with phishing, malware, and scams. These warnings are divided into two categories: “suspicious” and “dangerous,” each with different levels of risk.

Suspicious Site Warnings

Websites flagged as suspicious will have a “lower confidence verdict,” indicating a possible risk of user harm. Users are advised to proceed to the site only if they are completely confident that it is safe. These warnings are designed to alert users to potential risks without causing unnecessary alarm.

Dangerous Site Warnings

On the other hand, websites classified as dangerous will display a “higher confidence verdict” with a “high risk of user harm.” Users are strongly advised to avoid these sites completely to protect themselves from potential threats.

Visual Distinctions for Easy Identification

Users can easily distinguish between suspicious and dangerous site warnings at a glance. Suspicious site warnings will appear as a pop-up window on both desktop and mobile devices, with the webpage visible but darkened underneath. Users also have the option to mark a site as safe if it was flagged mistakenly. Dangerous site warnings, on the other hand, are hard to miss, taking up almost the entire screen with a solid red background replacing the website.

Enhanced Protection Mode

It is important to note that the suspicious site warnings will only appear when Enhanced Protection mode is turned on in Chrome. This additional layer of security helps users make informed decisions about the websites they visit and protects them from potential online threats.

Update, October 20th: The article has been updated to clarify that the suspicious site warnings are visible when Enhanced Protection mode is enabled.
