Capcom Reveals Data Breach Affecting Over 11 Million Capcom ID Accounts

The renowned video game publisher Capcom has disclosed a significant data breach that has resulted in a third-party gaining unauthorized access to information linked to more than 11 million Capcom ID accounts. The breach, which was detected due to suspicious activity surrounding the online service necessary for games like Street Fighter 6, was first noticed on October 19th. Since then, Capcom has been actively working to contain and address the issue.

According to a press release from Capcom, a total of 11,774,247 accounts had their email addresses and “system-specific identifier information” compromised in the breach. Additionally, 43 accounts had their date of birth, gender, country/region, and nickname details accessed.

While Capcom has not confirmed any unauthorized access to customer-set login passwords, they did identify 196 accounts where passwords were changed without authorization. Measures have been taken to reset these passwords, and ongoing investigations are being conducted to determine the full extent of the impact. It is important to note that credit card information was not among the compromised data.

Capcom has issued a cautionary statement regarding the potential for phishing attacks targeting the exposed email addresses. They advise affected individuals to remain vigilant and avoid clicking on any suspicious links or opening attachments from unknown sources.

Following the breach, Capcom promptly reported the incident to Osaka’s Prefectural Police and Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission. They have also taken steps to identify and address the method of attack involved in the breach. Moving forward, Capcom is committed to conducting a thorough investigation to implement enhanced security measures and prevent similar incidents in the future.
