Solidarity in Ashes: A Charcoal Tale of Love and Rebellion
The Importance of Diversifying Stories in Video Games
The world of video games has evolved over the past four decades, offering a plethora of big and bold ideas. However, amidst the abundance of creativity, there is often a lack of representation of real-life experiences. One such neglected aspect is the portrayal of workers’ strikes in games. While some games touch on this theme, very few are dedicated solely to exploring the dynamics of a strike. This is where “A Line Held Tight,” a mecha visual novel developed by Humble Grove, aims to make a difference.
Humble Grove, known for their narrative-driven game “No Longer Home,” is once again putting storytelling at the forefront with “A Line Held Tight.” Set in the 32nd century on a mining colony, players take on the role of The Canary, a protagonist navigating through a turbulent strike situation. The game’s Steam page teases, “As a strike boils over you’ll help The Canary to decide where their heart and their loyalties lie,” promising a branching narrative that delves into the characters and relationships within the mine.

What sets “A Line Held Tight” apart is its focus on the relationships The Canary forms with friends, family, and fellow workers. Instead of simply offering different endings, the game emphasizes the impact of choices on interpersonal connections, mirroring the importance of building alliances in real-world labor movements. The hand-drawn charcoal art and traditional folk soundtrack further enhance the immersive experience, creating a unique blend of visuals and music.
Despite not having a confirmed release date, “A Line Held Tight” offers a demo during Steam Next Fest, allowing players to get a glimpse of the game’s mechanics and storytelling. Additionally, Humble Grove has provided a behind-the-scenes video detailing the development process, giving insight into the thought and effort put into creating a game that explores such a compelling theme. Whether trying out the demo or not, adding the game to your Steam wishlist can show support for diverse storytelling in video games.
