Discrepancies in Fuel Economy Claims: Toyota, Chery, and Other Brands Under Scrutiny
The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) recently conducted Real-World Testing on several new car models to assess their fuel economy claims. The results revealed that many vehicles, including the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, MG HS, and Toyota Camry, failed to meet their laboratory-based fuel economy claims.
In the latest round of testing, the AAA found that the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC showed improvements since their last tests, while the Camry had a significant disparity between its official claim and real-world testing results. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro SUV had the widest gap in fuel consumption figures and emitted more CO2 than advertised.
Real-World Testing is an essential tool for consumers and fleet buyers to identify which cars perform as advertised. The federal government allocated $14 million to the AAA for testing 200 vehicles previously only tested under lab conditions, including electric vehicles.
The need for real-world testing was highlighted by the Volkswagen emissions scandal, and the data collected by the AAA is crucial in assessing how car makers are responding to emissions standards. However, the AAA has faced criticism for causing confusion with its testing methods.
The Electric Vehicle Council also raised concerns about the AAA’s testing of EVs. Despite this, the AAA continues to conduct real-world tests to provide transparent and consistent information to consumers.
The latest fuel consumption results from the AAA’s testing of various SUVs, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles revealed discrepancies between mandated lab test claims and actual testing results. The detailed overview of each test vehicle can be found on the AAA website.
Overall, Real-World Testing plays a vital role in ensuring transparency and accuracy in fuel consumption claims for vehicles in the Australian market. It helps consumers make informed decisions and holds car manufacturers accountable for their claims.
