Windows 11 Update 24H2: Explorer and Start Menu Crashes Cause Major Bugs
Windows 11 Bug Causes Critical System Component Crashes
Microsoft has recently acknowledged a critical bug in Windows 11 24H2 that leads to crashes in essential system components like File Explorer and the Start Menu. This issue arises after installing cumulative updates released since July 2025.
The bug affects users who log in after applying these updates and those using non-persistent operating system installations, such as virtual desktop infrastructure environments. On impacted systems, XAML dependency packages fail to register properly after updates, causing issues for multiple key Windows 11 shell components.
According to Microsoft, applications relying on XAML packages like MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS, Microsoft.UI.Xaml.CBS, and MicrosoftWindows.Client.Core fail to register in time after an update is installed. This timing issue cascades through the system, hindering critical interface components from initializing correctly.
This results in crashes of shell components like Explorer.exe, StartMenuExperienceHost, and ShellHost.exe, leading to visible errors or silent failures. Users are left with partially functional systems that lack various navigation tools.
Affected users may encounter Start menu crashes, missing taskbars, and core system processes crashing. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is working on a resolution to address it.
Temporary Workaround Provided by Microsoft
While a permanent fix is in development, Microsoft has shared PowerShell commands that users can manually execute to register the missing XAML packages. These commands need to be run targeting each affected package, followed by a system restart for functionality restoration.
Organizations managing non-persistent enterprise environments using virtual desktop infrastructure are particularly impacted by this bug. Microsoft recommends running a specific logon script on such installations to ensure the required packages are provisioned before the desktop environment loads.
Additionally, Nvidia has released a GeForce Hotfix Display Driver to address gaming performance issues caused by the Windows 11 October 2025 cumulative update, while Microsoft has issued emergency updates to fix ESU install errors and a Windows 11 hotpatch install loop.
