Texas Police Recover 100 iPhones After Halloween Theft Spree

In November, the Austin Police Department recovered more than 100 stolen iPhones in the downtown area following an investigation into organized pickpocketing. The department is seeking the owners of these devices and has shared photos of the screens for identification.

The Downtown Area Rapid Response Team (DARRT) played a key role in recovering the phones, urging victims to file online reports with IMEI and serial numbers for matching.

According to APD Lt. Eric Cleveland, cellphone thefts by pickpockets are escalating, with thieves using distraction tactics to steal smartphones and wallets.

Notably, iPhones remain a prime target for criminals globally, as seen in London where thieves preferred them over other devices. One victim recounted a thief returning his non-iPhone, stating, “Don’t want no Samsung.”

Irish Businessman Sentenced for “Zombie” iPhone Fraud

In Ireland, a Chinese businessman named Chengwen Guo received a seven-year sentence for orchestrating a fraudulent scheme involving fake iPhones from China. Guo exchanged these “zombie” iPhones for genuine ones under warranty, resulting in a total value of nearly $11.9 million USD.

The judge described Guo as a highly active individual engaged in significant criminal activities, emphasizing the severity of his actions.

California Duo Caught Stealing iPhone from Apple Store

Two individuals were apprehended in California for attempting to steal an iPhone 17 Pro Max from an Apple Store in Irvine. Their failed robbery was preceded by a similar incident at a Target store in the area.

The Irvine Police Department humorously recounted the thieves’ escapades, revealing a car filled with stolen iPhones emitting alerts to return them to Apple.

Angel Osorio and Jonatan Alvarado, both from New York, faced charges of organized retail theft for their actions.

AirTag Aids in Recovery of Stolen Construction Equipment

A strategically placed AirTag assisted police in locating a suspect who stole construction equipment worth $7,000 from a Chick-fil-A construction site in Mississippi. The AirTag attached to a Stihl leaf blower led authorities to the alleged thief.

The victim’s prompt identification of the AirTag’s location facilitated the arrest of Robert Beach on grand larceny charges, with potential additional charges pending.
