Google says it will link to more sources in AI Mode

Google Enhances AI Mode with More In-Line Links to Sources

Google has announced plans to update its AI-powered search feature, AI Mode, to include additional in-line links to the sources from which it gathers information. This update is part of a broader change in how Google interacts with sources, with the company stating that it will introduce links embedded within AI Mode alongside AI-generated snippets to explain their relevance.

Improved Source Descriptions in AI Mode

An example shared by Google showcases how AI Mode will now display its descriptions of relevant sources directly above the carousel that contains the links to those sources. For instance, the AI-generated description may read, “These articles suggest budget-friendly decor ideas, including secondhand shopping, architectural updates like molding and hardware swaps, and DIY projects to achieve a vintage look.”

Response to European Commission Investigation

Google’s update comes shortly after the European Commission launched an investigation into the company’s use of content from web publishers in AI features without providing “appropriate compensation.” In response to a study claiming that people were less likely to click on links when an AI Overview is present on the page, Google stated that click volume has remained relatively stable.

Partnership with Publishers and AI-Driven Experiments

Google is collaborating with various publishers, including The Guardian, The Washington Post, and the Washington Examiner, to explore how AI can help increase audience engagement. One experiment involves displaying AI-written overviews of articles within Google News. Additionally, Google is working with The Associated Press and other organizations to deliver real-time information in the Gemini app.

Expansion of Access to Preferred Sources

In addition to the AI Mode update, Google is expanding access to “preferred sources” globally, allowing English speakers worldwide to select their preferred news outlets for top stories in the search engine. A new feature will highlight links from news subscriptions and present stories in a dedicated carousel. This feature will first be rolled out in the Gemini app before being introduced to AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Web Guide Update and Faster Search Results

Google is also updating Web Guide, an experiment in Search Labs that utilizes Gemini AI to categorize search results into AI-generated categories. The company claims that Web Guide now loads twice as fast and will be available for a wider range of searches.
