Tesla finally increases its warranty coverage in Australia

Tesla has officially announced a significant upgrade to its vehicle warranty, now offering a five-year, unlimited-kilometre coverage for all new vehicles delivered starting January 1, 2026. This new warranty surpasses the previous four-year, 80,000km warranty and includes coverage for various components such as the infotainment system, corrosion protection, and exterior paint.

While the battery warranty remains unchanged, Tesla’s coverage aligns closely with that of its competitors. Entry-level versions of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV come with an eight-year or 160,000km battery warranty, while the Model 3 Long Range RWD and Performance, as well as the Model Y Long Range AWD and Performance, offer eight years or 192,000km of coverage. Tesla also guarantees a minimum of 70 per cent battery retention over the warranty period.

In a recent press release, Thom Drew, Tesla’s country director for Australia and New Zealand, expressed excitement about introducing this innovative warranty offering, highlighting Tesla’s commitment to enhancing the ownership experience for its customers.

The previous four-year warranty had positioned Tesla among brands like Aston Martin and Toyota, but this new five-year warranty aligns with market expectations and instills confidence in Tesla ownership. Hyundai was the first auto brand in Australia to offer a five-year warranty back in 1999, with sister brand Kia later introducing a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty in 2014.

In recent years, longer warranties, such as 10-year coverage, have become more prevalent, with brands like Mitsubishi, Nissan, and MG leading the way. Despite offering only two models in Australia, Tesla has established itself as the leading EV brand by sales volume in the market. However, its market share in Australia has declined, with BYD coming close behind in sales and overtaking Tesla in global EV sales.

Despite these challenges, the Model Y remains Australia’s top-selling EV, with the Model 3 continuing to be the most popular electric passenger car. The future for Tesla in the Australian market remains promising, with ongoing developments and advancements in the EV sector.
