Whopping new Crimson Desert video sharpens suspicion that it's a really shonky Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

A Closer Look at Crimson Desert: A Gritty Medieval Fantasy Adventure

Upon my initial playthrough of Crimson Desert, I found myself struggling to pinpoint its genre – was it reminiscent of Spider-Man, The Witcher, Dynasty Warriors, Dragon’s Dogma, or Jedi Academy? However, after watching the first of three insightful talkthrough videos by developers Pearl Abyss, the game’s essence became clearer in my mind. It seems to be a grittier medieval fantasy take on The Legend Of Zelda, particularly evident with the presence of airborne ruins. While it may lack the elegance and completeness of some well-known titles, it certainly holds its own unique charm. Without further ado, let’s delve into the world of Crimson Desert.

Crimson Desert appears to be a wild ride, with protagonist Kliff Macduff showcasing a variety of eccentric abilities and movements. From grappling and mech piloting to barrel throwing and wrestling moves, Kliff Macduff is a character brimming with versatility. This diverse range of actions adds an element of unpredictability to the gameplay, creating a blend of mechanical silliness and tonal seriousness. While some may view this as a potential flaw, others might see it as a refreshing departure from traditional gaming experiences.

Watching the gameplay video provides a glimpse into the chaotic world of Crimson Desert, alleviating the need to master its intricate control scheme firsthand. Having had the opportunity to play an early version of the game, I can attest to the challenges of navigating Kliff Macduff through a maze of conflicting abilities while battling against the overwhelming forces of jetlag.

During my demo, I often found myself inadvertently launching Kliff Macduff into precarious situations, mistaking enemies for allies, and grappling with the surreal nature of the game’s mechanics. The boss battles, reminiscent of the intensity found in games like Steel Battalion, present a formidable challenge that will test even the most seasoned gamers. Despite its quirks and complexities, Crimson Desert offers a unique gaming experience that is both exhilarating and perplexing.
