Kia Australia Considering High-Performance EV4 GT for Local Market

Kia Australia is currently contemplating the introduction of the high-performance EV4 GT to the Australian market. This decision also leaves room for the possibility of the European-built EV4 Hatch making its way to Australia.

During the launch event for the new EV4 Sedan, Roland Rivero, the general manager for product at Kia’s Australian division, mentioned that they are carefully assessing the business case for these potential additions to their lineup.

According to Mr. Rivero, each variant being considered must offer tangible value to Kia Australia. Whether it’s positioned as a halo variant or based on pricing, it must earn the prestigious GT badge and be positioned as a true GT model.

The 2026 Kia EV4 GT, unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show, boasts a 215kW dual-motor AWD electric drive system powered by an 81.4kWh battery. With 145kW in the front and 70kW in the rear, the EV4 GT accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds.

Enhancements exclusive to the GT model include GT-specific chassis tuning, 20-inch alloy wheels with performance-oriented tires, a dedicated GT drive mode, Virtual Gear Shift (VGS), and active sound design inspired by other high-performance Hyundai-Kia EVs like the Ioniq 5 N.

Inside, the EV4 GT features semi-bucket sport seats, a three-spoke GT steering wheel with a lime green 12 o’clock marker, and a unique user interface for GT mode.

While only the hatchback version was showcased in Brussels, the GT variant of the EV4 Fastback (known as the EV4 Sedan) is confirmed for production in South Korea, catering to global markets, including Australia.

However, the broader EV4 Hatch range is still under evaluation for the Australian market due to challenges related to European production costs and its positioning against the EV4 Sedan (Fastback) in the local lineup.

Issues such as higher manufacturing costs, unfavorable exchange rates, and complex logistics may impact the feasibility of introducing the EV4 Hatch to Australia.

With the recent launch of the EV4 Sedan range in Australia starting at $49,990 plus on-road costs, the length difference between the hatchback and sedan models may affect the hatchback’s positioning and perceived value.

Looking at other models in the Australian Kia lineup, such as the K4 Hatch and Sedan, pricing remains consistent across body styles and trim levels, as both are manufactured in the same Mexican factory.
