Alexa is moving into Amazon․com

Amazon has introduced Alexa Plus to Amazon.com, integrating its LLM-powered AI assistant directly into the company’s shopping experience. Starting today, customers can interact with Alexa for Shopping when typing a query into Amazon. This new shopping assistant, powered by Alexa Plus, can provide answers to questions like “What’s a good skincare routine for men” or “When did I last order AA batteries.”

Alexa for Shopping is replacing Amazon’s Rufus AI shopping assistant and will be prominently featured on the Amazon app and website. This AI assistant will take over all of Rufus’s responsibilities and bring additional features. Users can now set price alerts, compare items, and automatically reorder products using Alexa for Shopping. It can even auto-purchase items based on specific parameters set by the user, such as price drops or time since the last purchase.

Furthermore, Alexa for Shopping can shop on other websites using the Buy for Me feature, track a full year of price history for a product, and search for products and deals using scheduled actions. This can all be done simply by typing queries into the search bar.

The service is accessible to all Amazon customers in the US and does not require an Alexa account. According to Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa and Echo, availability will increase over the coming weeks. In addition to the main search bar, the Alexa for Shopping assistant will also be available in a dedicated chat window.

Alexa for Shopping is a combination of Alexa and Rufus, offering a more integrated, capable experience available across all Amazon and Alexa devices. The assistant leverages various models and reasoning to provide comprehensive answers to user queries, pulling information from Amazon.com and the web.

Users with Echo smart speakers or Show smart displays will receive a more personalized experience. For example, if a user interacts with Alexa Plus on a smart speaker and then searches for related products on Amazon.com, Alexa for Shopping will have context from the previous conversation. Price alerts set on products will also be visible on Show devices and the Amazon app.

When searching for specific items, Alexa for Shopping can create a shopping guide comparing features, prices, and reviews across Amazon and the web. This comprehensive shopping experience includes product comparisons and AI-generated overviews from customer reviews.

The Echo Show smart displays will feature an enhanced visual shopping experience with Alexa for Shopping. Users can expect a full Amazon store interface that allows for voice commands and touch navigation. This interface enables users to adjust settings, change payment methods, and filter products based on specific features.

In comparison to other chatbot-based shopping features, Amazon believes that Alexa Plus offers a more complete end-to-end shopping experience. Rausch emphasizes the importance of providing a seamless journey from idea to purchase, acknowledging the complexity and attention to detail required for such a service.
