Closing the Privacy Gap: How iOS 26.5 Enhances RCS Security

Apple has recently launched iOS 26.5, with a focus on enhancing security features. Despite the upcoming release of iOS 27, there are compelling reasons to update to the latest version right away. The update includes a significant security enhancement for communication with Android users in Messages, which Apple has highlighted in a newsroom announcement.

The standout feature in iOS 26.5 is the introduction of end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta for iPhone users running the latest version and Android users on Google Messages. This encryption ensures that messages cannot be intercepted during transmission between devices, providing users with a secure communication channel. Users can easily identify encrypted conversations with a new lock icon in their RCS chats. The encryption is enabled by default and will gradually be activated for both new and existing RCS chats.

Although Apple labels this feature as a beta release, the limitation lies in its availability across carriers rather than within iOS itself. Not all carriers support the feature yet, and Android users must update to the latest version of Google Messages to participate. Apple has updated its carrier support page to indicate which carriers are compatible with the new RCS profile, with most major North American carriers already onboard.

The situation with Android compatibility is slightly more complex, as Google’s previous RCS encryption was proprietary, leading to interoperability issues with Apple. However, the introduction of the Message Layer Security (MLS) standard by the GSMA prompted both Apple and Google to adopt end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging. While Google has rolled out the feature in a public update for Google Messages, some Android users may still need to update their devices to engage in encrypted chats.

In addition to the RCS messaging update, iOS 26.5 addresses over 60 security vulnerabilities, as listed in Apple’s security release notes. With more than 50 distinct security issues resolved, Apple has also released updates for older iOS versions to ensure device security. Despite no reported exploitation of these vulnerabilities, staying updated with the latest iOS release is crucial to prevent potential security breaches.
