Amazon has enough satellites to launch its Starlink competitor

Amazon’s Starlink Competitor, Amazon Leo, Grows Stronger

Amazon has made significant strides in its efforts to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink internet service. With the recent deployment of 396 satellites, Amazon Leo now has enough infrastructure to provide continuous service across initial latitudes. This development, spearheaded by Chris Weber, VP of Amazon Leo, puts the company on track to achieve commercial availability by mid-2026. However, users should manage their expectations as the service may not deliver miracles immediately.

SpaceX’s Starlink Continues to Improve

In comparison, SpaceX launched its “Better than nothing beta” in 2020 with nearly 900 satellites in operation. Initially serving a limited user base in the US and Canada, the service faced challenges such as frequent interruptions and sensitivity to obstructions. However, by 2022, significant enhancements were made to both the service quality and coverage areas.

Future Prospects for Amazon’s Leo Service

Early adopters of Amazon’s Leo service can anticipate ongoing improvements in performance, capacity, and global coverage as additional satellite launches are planned.

Starlink’s Dominance in the Market

Currently, SpaceX leads the market with over 10,000 Starlink satellites operating worldwide, providing reliable internet connectivity in various settings. While performance may vary based on factors like service level, time of day, and user location, users can expect median download speeds of 200Mbps, upload speeds ranging from 10Mbps to 40Mbps, and latency around 25ms.

Challenges Ahead for Amazon

Although Amazon aims to deploy 3,232 Leo satellites in the future, it faces delays in reaching performance levels comparable to Starlink. Jeff Bezos’ struggles with Blue Origin’s New Glenn launch vehicle have contributed to the setbacks, making it a long road ahead for Amazon in the satellite internet race.
