Bungie Announces Layoffs Following Conclusion of Destiny 2 Support
Bungie Confirms Employee Layoffs Following Destiny 2 Support End
Bungie has officially announced on social media that they will be laying off employees in the wake of ending support for Destiny 2.
The exact number of employees being laid off has not been disclosed, but Bungie acknowledges that the failure to secure a future for Destiny is the reason behind the layoffs. They express genuine remorse for those affected by this decision.
The statement released by Bungie reads:
With great sadness, we are announcing a reduction in force as we reorganize Bungie.
As the leaders of Bungie, past and present, we recognize Destiny 2 fell short of expectations in recent years. Following the final content update to Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in early stages, we unfortunately could not sustain our previous workforce size.
We understand the significant impact this decision has on those affected, their families, friends, and colleagues. While these changes are necessary for the studio’s present and future positioning, we acknowledge the difficulty of this moment and the hardship it brings.
More details about our future plans will be shared in due course, but today we extend our gratitude and empathy to every Bungie team member affected and those who remain.
We ask for your understanding and support during this time.
Following the announcement of Destiny 2’s discontinuation in May, it was widely anticipated that layoffs would ensue. Reports surfaced regarding staff being transferred to the Marathon team in advance, Sony’s financial constraints hindering the development of Destiny 3, and members of the Destiny 2 team exploring new project opportunities. Despite a surge in player numbers after the final content update, the situation remained unchanged.
The outcomes of these project pitches and the potential retention of jobs remain uncertain. However, it is essential to wish all affected Bungie employees well as they navigate their future endeavors.
