Microsoft Layoffs: Id Software Reassures Players Amidst Cuts

Recent reports of mass layoffs at Microsoft have caused concern, but affected studios like Id Software, developers of Doom, are working to reassure players that the cuts are not the end of the world. Hugo Martin, director of Doom: The Dark Ages, addressed the layoffs during an official livestream of the game’s Revelations DLC, released the same week 136 Id workers were laid off.

During the stream, Martin debunked rumors of Id Software being “nerfed into the ground” or “gutted,” emphasizing that the team is the same size as when they developed Doom 2016. He highlighted the presence of Id Tech engineers in Frankfurt and at MachineGames, emphasizing that collaboration is ongoing. Martin expressed excitement about future projects and assured fans that Id Tech is thriving.

Joshua Boyle, Id’s senior community lead, expressed gratitude to Doom fans for their support during the release of the Revelations DLC and for championing the work of those affected by the layoffs. Martin reiterated the importance of creating successful games and acknowledged the positive impact on the studio and those who had to say goodbye.

Despite the layoffs, Martin mentioned that The Dark Ages is performing well compared to forecasts. Developers have expressed frustration over not receiving clear metrics from Microsoft regarding their games’ performance, leading to uncertainty about the reasons behind the job cuts.

Unions backed by the Communications Workers of America have organized rallies outside Bethesda, ZeniMax, and Id offices in support of laid-off staff. The names and titles of senior staff affected by the layoffs have started to emerge through WARN notices.
