End of Support: Apple Ceases Signing iOS Updates for Older iPhone and iPad Models

Apple stops signing iOS versions for several older iPhones and iPads

Apple has recently made changes to its iOS signing process that will impact older iPhone and iPad users. As of today, several older iOS versions are no longer being validated for over-the-air (OTA) and direct IPSW installs on certain devices.

This change means that users with older devices will no longer be able to restore or downgrade to the following iOS versions:

– iPhone 4 (CDMA) will no longer support IPSW installs of iOS 7.1.2
– iPhone 4S will no longer support OTA installs of iOS 6.1.3 and iOS 8.4.1, as well as IPSW installs of iOS 9.3.5 and iOS 9.3.6
– GSM and CDMA iPhone 5 will no longer support OTA installs of iOS 8.4.1, plus IPSW installs of iOS 10.3.3 and iOS 10.3.4
– GSM and CDMA iPhone 5c will no longer support IPSW installs of iOS 10.3.3
– iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular will no longer support OTA installs of iOS 8.4.1, plus IPSW installs of iOS 9.3.5 and iOS 9.3.6
– And more

It’s worth noting that iOS and iPadOS were split with the release of iPadOS 13, so iPads running older system versions were actually running iOS. This change may affect a small percentage of users who rely on legacy devices for testing or app compatibility.

Apple typically stops signing older versions for legacy devices, and while this move may inconvenience some users, it is a common practice for the company.

If you own one of the affected devices, let us know in the comments.

Overall, Apple has resumed signing the iOS versions mentioned in this article, allowing owners of legacy devices to restore to those software versions once again.
