Apple introduced the initial iOS 26.6 beta on May 26, followed by several more betas for both developers and public beta testers. Today, they unveiled the iOS 26.6 Release Candidate (RC), indicating that a public rollout is imminent.

While much of Apple’s attention has shifted towards iOS 27, iOS 26.6 doesn’t offer major changes for iPhone users. However, it does introduce a crucial modification that paves the way for the forthcoming iOS 27.

The standout feature of iOS 27 is Siri AI, which depends on reindexing your iPhone. This reindexing process occurs in the background while you continue to use your device.

iOS 27 is scheduled for a fall release to all users. In preparation for this, iOS 26.6 aims to "optimize" your iPhone’s Spotlight index, ensuring a faster indexing process when you upgrade to iOS 27 later this year.

Apple’s release notes for iOS 26.6 state, "This update includes bug fixes, security updates, and optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27."

Apart from the iOS 27 optimization, iOS 26.6 doesn’t introduce many new features. However, it does include a new alert for blocking excessive contacts. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on an anti-snatching iPhone feature, although it may not be part of this update.

Details regarding the security fixes included in iOS 26.6 have not been disclosed by Apple yet. Once the update is officially rolled out, the security fixes will be outlined on the company’s website.

As Apple has released the iOS 26.6 RC, the final version is expected to be available to all users within the next two weeks. Previous .6 updates from Apple were released around late July, as seen with iOS 18.6 in 2025, iOS 17.6 in 2024, iOS 16.6 in 2023, and iOS 15.6 in 2022.
