Munich-based QuantumDiamonds Secures €91 Million Funding Round to Scale Production of Quantum-Based Semiconductor Inspection Technology

QuantumDiamonds (QD), a company based in Munich, has recently announced the successful completion of a €91 million funding round aimed at expanding the production of its quantum-based semiconductor inspection technology. This funding round marks a significant milestone for the company as it continues to revolutionize the semiconductor industry.

Combination of Equity Round and Non-Dilutive Funding

The financing consists of a €15 million equity round led by World Fund, along with €76 million in non-dilutive funding approved at the EU level under the European Chips Act. The non-dilutive funding was made possible through support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Free State of Bavaria. This combination of funding sources highlights the strong support and confidence in QuantumDiamonds’ innovative technology.

The €15 million equity round led by World Fund saw participation from Bayern Kapital, as well as existing investors such as IQ Capital, Earlybird, First Momentum, UnternehmerTUM, Creator Fund, Onsight Ventures, and angel investors.

Kevin Berghoff, CEO and co-founder of QuantumDiamonds, expressed his excitement about the funding round, stating, “This is a major step in bringing quantum sensing into fabs worldwide. The response from leading chipmakers has been clear: they see our technology as essential for solving yield challenges that today’s systems can’t address.”

Revolutionizing Semiconductor Inspection Technology

Founded in 2022 by Berghoff and Dr. Fleming Bruckmaier as a spin-out of the Technical University of Munich, QuantumDiamonds specializes in manufacturing semiconductor inspection technology that allows chipmakers to analyze their advanced chips non-destructively.

The company’s innovative microscope for electric currents detects hidden defects, enhances production yields, and accelerates development cycles for next-generation packaging technologies. QuantumDiamonds’ technology addresses the limitations of traditional semiconductor inspection tools by providing a solution for detecting buried defects in complex 3D chip architectures.

According to QuantumDiamonds, its technology leverages atomic-scale defects in synthetic diamonds to detect magnetic fields with extreme precision, enabling non-destructive 3D current imaging at the nanoscale. This capability allows for pinpointing the exact location and depth of chip defects, ultimately improving production efficiency and reducing costs.

Expansion and Future Plans

In March 2026, QuantumDiamonds expanded into Asia by establishing a regional hub in Taiwan and appointing industry veteran Peter Lemmens as Managing Director Asia. The company also installed its first U.S. system at Eurofins EAG Laboratories in California and completed its first Asian deployment at Integrated Service Technology (iST) in Taiwan.

Looking ahead, QuantumDiamonds unveiled plans to invest €152 million in building the world’s first production facility for advanced chip-testing systems. The facility will include sensor production lines for quantum-grade diamond substrates, cleanroom integration of QDM inspection systems, joint development labs with semiconductor partners, and application support for fab integration and inline process control.

The company aims to use the fresh funding to deliver lab systems to leading chipmakers, enhance wafer-level capabilities for high-throughput fab inspection, and expand its engineering team. QuantumDiamonds is already engaged with nine of the world’s top ten semiconductor manufacturers and is set to receive manufacturing funding under the European Chips Act.

She emphasized the significance of investing in cutting-edge technology within the semiconductor industry to reduce dependency on external sources and drive innovation.
