EVE Online's Cradle of War expansion wants to make the space MMO more welcoming to new players, before killing them in galaxy-wide omniconflict

The Challenge of Welcoming New Players to EVE Online

Attracting and retaining new players to EVE Online has long been a puzzle for Fenris Creations, the developers behind the MMORPG formerly known as CCP Games. While many are drawn in by the game’s stories of espionage and military exploits, they often struggle with its complex economic systems and the presence of unpredictable players engaging in piracy and scams. The upcoming expansion, Cradle of War, set to launch on June 9th, aims to address this issue.

Unveiled at EVE FanFest, Cradle of War introduces objective-based military campaigns for each of the game’s four major empire factions. However, the most significant addition might be Exordium, a new player-friendly area designed to provide a safe introduction to EVE Online. In Exordium, PvP combat is disabled, allowing new players to learn the basics of gameplay before venturing into the main game world.

While Exordium offers a gentler start for newcomers, it also raises questions about the core essence of EVE Online, known for its emphasis on risk and unpredictability. Despite its limitations on certain activities like mining and trading, Exordium serves as a stepping stone for players to eventually transition to the main game.

Cradle of War also introduces opportunities for mercenary work, allowing players to participate in faction-based military campaigns and choose their allegiances strategically. The expansion features new ship options, including Navy Destroyers and Tech 2 Command Carriers, catering to different playstyles and preferences.

In addition to new ships, Cradle of War introduces achievements and titles as a way to showcase players’ accomplishments in the game. These features add a layer of progression and recognition for dedicated players.
