Paris-based Innovafeed secures €51 million to scale sustainable insect-based ingredients for animal and plant nutrition

Innovafeed, a BioTech startup based in Paris, is making waves in the industry with its innovative approach to producing insect-based ingredients for animal nutrition, pet food, and agriculture. Recently, the company secured a significant €51 million funding round from its financial partners, signaling a new phase of development.

The funding round was largely backed by Innovafeed’s historical shareholders, including Creadev, QIA, Temasek, FFC, ABC Impact, and ADM, as well as its banking partners. This support has enabled the company to complete its industrialization phase and reorganize its activities around the Nesle site, focusing on the commercial development of its product ranges.

Clément Ray, the CEO and cofounder of Innovafeed, expressed his vision for the company, stating, “Since day one, we have carried a dual ambition: to demonstrate that we can produce high-performing, competitive, and sustainable ingredients for nutrition without relying on the intensive exploitation of marine resources; and that it is possible to build an innovative industrial project in France.”

Innovafeed, founded in 2016 by Aude Guo, Bastien Oggeri, and Clément Ray, specializes in developing technology to rear and transform the Hermetia illucens fly (Black soldier fly) for animal and plant nutrition. This innovative approach offers alternatives to traditional fishmeal and vegetable oils used in fish and animal feed.

The company’s unique technology allows it to reproduce the natural cycle of the insect on a large scale under controlled and optimized conditions. With the use of 3,000 sensors to monitor breeding conditions and AI to automate certain processes, Innovafeed aims to put the insect back at the heart of the food chain.

Innovafeed has also developed a proprietary industrial process that transforms larvae using a wet method, ensuring high product quality, particularly in digestibility.

Following a successful funding round in 2022, where the company raised €250 million, Innovafeed has achieved significant milestones, including the full operational status of its Nesle production unit. The company has witnessed strong commercial traction, doubling revenues each year through structured partnerships with clients. Additionally, Innovafeed has demonstrated environmental impact by reducing carbon emissions through its innovative products.

As Innovafeed enters a new phase of growth, it plans to redirect its investments towards commercial deployment and operational excellence. The new funding will enable the company to accelerate the commercial development of its product ranges, invest in industrial equipment and processes, and optimize its production capacity.

In conclusion, Innovafeed’s innovative approach to insect-based ingredients for animal nutrition and agriculture is revolutionizing the industry. With a strong focus on sustainability and efficiency, the company is poised for further growth and success in the coming years.
