Google Expanding AI Feature to Enable Messaging Friends and Family

Google is reportedly considering extending its AI feature, known as “Call for Me,” to allow users to send messages to their loved ones. According to Android Authority, a recent APK teardown revealed a new feature called “Gemini Calling,” which includes examples like “Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late” and “Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner.”

Potential Limitations of Gemini Feature

Despite the expansion, the Gemini feature may be restricted to basic, text message-like calls. While Google’s AI may not be capable of facilitating entire phone conversations with relatives, it could be useful for sending quick messages to individuals who prefer calls over texts or those who frequently miss text notifications, or even for individuals who still use landline phones.

Granular Permissions and Potential Features

Android Authority also noted the presence of “granular permissions” for Gemini actions within individual apps, including settings related to phone call permissions. These settings could allow users to customize the capabilities they grant to Gemini, potentially enabling them to opt out of receiving automated calls from the feature. However, there is a possibility that Google may choose not to release this expansion or the granular app settings to the public, as highlighted by Android Authority.
