Revamping Mazda’s Elite SUV Lineup: Strategies for Boosting Sales Performance
Mazda Plans Extensive Updates for Large Architecture-based SUV Lineup
Mazda is currently in the process of updating its lineup of Large Architecture-based SUVs, including the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90. The decision to revamp these models comes as sales have not met initial projections.
According to Mazda President Masahiro Moro, the updates will encompass the exterior, interior, and powertrain of the vehicles. These upgrades are said to be on a scale never seen before and are aimed at establishing these SUVs as Mazda’s flagship products.
The extent of these updates remains unclear, but the models are expected to receive enhancements across various components, including a new platform, inline six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrains, and a new transmission.
In March 2025, Mazda announced plans to incorporate its Skyactiv-Z compression ignition engine technology into the Large Architecture-based SUVs between 2028 and 2030. Additionally, the company is exploring the integration of new in-house-developed hybrid systems into these vehicles.
While the CX-60 has already undergone multiple updates to address ride quality concerns, the other models in Mazda’s Large Product Group have received only minor specification adjustments and pricing revisions in certain markets like Australia.
Challenges in the Global Market
Despite Mazda’s efforts to boost sales, the Large Architecture-based SUVs have faced challenges in various markets. In the US, tariffs imposed on imported vehicles have affected the sales of the CX-70 and CX-90, leading to a decline in numbers.
Mazda’s North American chief financial officer, Jeffrey Guyton, expressed dissatisfaction with the current sales figures and emphasized the need to expand the Large Platform business. The company is working on safety campaigns and product enhancements to increase the appeal of these SUVs.
In regions like Europe and Japan, sales of the CX-60 and CX-80 have also witnessed a decrease. Mazda is striving to address these issues and improve the performance of its Large Architecture-based models in these markets.
Future Outlook and Adjustments
Despite falling short of sales targets, Mazda is optimistic about the future of its SUV lineup. The company aims to enhance awareness and product appeal for the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90 through strategic initiatives.
Recent price adjustments and model realignments have been implemented to make the vehicles more competitive in the market. Mazda is committed to refining its offerings and delivering an exceptional driving experience to customers.
