Apple recently announced the success of its Detroit-based Manufacturing Academy in bringing AI technology to American factories. The facility, which opened in August 2025, is part of Apple’s larger commitment to invest in US manufacturing. The Apple Manufacturing Academy aims to support small- and medium-sized businesses by offering free courses on AI and smart manufacturing techniques, both in-person and online.

The Academy, in partnership with Michigan State University (MSU), provides specific courses and access to Apple engineers for consultations. This partnership aims to help US companies improve their supply chains and streamline their operations.

Apple recently hosted a Spring Forum at MSU, where industry leaders and academics showcased how American businesses are implementing the Academy’s teachings to enhance their operations. One example highlighted was Block Imaging, a Michigan-based company specializing in servicing medical equipment. Block Imaging has successfully modernized its operations and improved efficiency on the factory floor after applying learnings from the program.

The forum included tours of various facilities and discussions on incorporating AI into manufacturing at scale. Apple’s vice president of Product Operations, Priya Balasubramaniam, emphasized the Academy’s goal of enhancing productivity and efficiency for American manufacturers. The partnership between Apple and MSU is crucial in preparing workers for an AI-enabled economy.

The Apple Manufacturing Academy, the only institution of its kind in North America, has already supported over 150 American businesses through training sessions. The Academy is open to businesses nationwide and aims to expand its reach through virtual programming.
