Roku Enhances Viewing Experience with Cloud DVR Capability for Peacock Premium Plus Members

As part of a five-year agreement with NBCUniversal, Roku users who subscribe to Peacock Premium Plus via the Roku Channel app can access cloud DVR for live content.

This means that Premium Plus subscribers have the ability to record and watch Premier League matches, MLB games, NFL Sunday Night Football, and more at their convenience on their Roku devices.

While DVR services were popular in the past with companies like TiVo and Sky, the rise of streaming services and on-demand content has diminished their popularity. However, for live sports and events that are not available for streaming after airing, DVR remains the only option for reliving those moments. By opting for cloud-based storage, Roku eliminates the need for bulky storage devices.

It’s important to note that the cloud DVR feature is exclusively available to Peacock Premium Plus subscribers through the Roku Channel. Subscribers who sign up directly through Peacock will not have access to this feature.

Currently, Peacock Premium Plus is priced at $16.99 per month, with an annual subscription available at a slightly lower cost of $169.99. In addition to live sports, the service offers ad-free streaming, offline downloads, and full access to the Peacock catalog.

With a multitude of streaming options available from companies like Apple and Amazon, it is strategic for Roku to invest in features like cloud DVR to stay competitive in the market.

Roku has hinted at the possibility of expanding cloud DVR to more services later this year. Considering the increasing focus on live sports by platforms like Netflix and Disney+, it is plausible that Roku may extend this feature to include these services as well.

While the cloud DVR feature is currently limited to US Roku users, there is potential for demand for digital recording services globally, especially as traditional recording options like Sky Q become less prevalent.
