Simplifying European Supercomputing: The Launch of the EuroHPC Federation Platform
EuroHPC Federation Platform: Revolutionizing European Supercomputing Collaboration
The EuroHPC Federation Platform is a groundbreaking initiative designed to transform how researchers, businesses, and public sector organizations interact with EuroHPC systems. By acting as a unified gateway, this platform eliminates longstanding barriers to entry and collaboration, ushering in a new era of seamless cooperation.
At its core, the EuroHPC Federation Platform serves as a central access point for multiple operational EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU) systems. This streamlined approach simplifies the authentication and authorization process, replacing the need for users to navigate separate credentials and procedures across various supercomputing centers.
Anders Jensen, the Executive Director of the EuroHPC JU, emphasized the platform’s significance by stating that its initial release marks the beginning of a journey towards a more connected and integrated European supercomputing ecosystem. This empowerment of Europe’s scientific, industrial, and academic communities is set to bolster the continent’s capacity for innovation.
Tackling Fragmentation in Europe’s HPC Landscape
Europe’s supercomputing infrastructure comprises top-tier systems spread across different centers, each with its unique tools and procedures. This diversity, while showcasing regional expertise, has historically hindered access and collaboration across borders due to varying authentication methods, resource allocation processes, and software provisioning.
The EuroHPC Federation Platform addresses this fragmentation by introducing a secure and standardized layer that connects these systems without compromising their individual strengths. By simplifying user interactions with multiple infrastructures, the platform facilitates cross-site collaboration and enhances overall efficiency.
A Unified Platform for Accessibility and Efficiency
Positioned as a comprehensive “one-stop shop,” the EuroHPC Federation Platform caters to a wide user base, including researchers, SMEs, and public authorities. Its federated software catalogue and streamlined allocation and data transfer processes reduce administrative burdens and enhance usability.
Furthermore, the platform supports broader strategic objectives such as cost-efficiency, high security standards, and the promotion of energy-efficient computing practices. These elements align with Europe’s commitment to sustainable and responsible digital infrastructure development.
Strong Consortium Driving Development
The development of the EuroHPC Federation Platform commenced under the leadership of CSC–IT Center for Science in January 2025. The initiative has brought together a consortium of key European institutions, including IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center, the University of Tartu, Ghent University, GÉANT, and NORDUnet.
This collaborative approach underscores the platform’s overarching mission to consolidate expertise across Europe while delivering a cohesive user experience.
Future Expansion: AI, Quantum, and Data Ecosystems
While the initial rollout of the EuroHPC Federation Platform focuses on new projects and allocations, its scalability is a key design consideration. Future updates will expand its capabilities to encompass EuroHPC AI Factories and quantum computing resources.
Additionally, the platform is poised to integrate with major European data environments like SIMPL, EOSC, and FENIX, enabling users to access distributed data lakes and spaces alongside computing power through a unified interface.
As the platform evolves, it is positioned to play a pivotal role in advancing research and industrial innovation across Europe, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of the continent’s digital infrastructure strategy.
