The Conquest of Aegon: Unleashing Dragons and Warlords
Warner Bros Announces “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” at CinemaCon
Warner Bros confirmed in 2024 its plans for a film set in George R. R. Martin’s universe, sparking months of speculation among fans. During this year’s CinemaCon presentation, the studio unveiled the working title of the project: Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
Warner Bros Discovery seems to be following a trend of developing both TV series and cinematic films set in the same fictional universe. Spin-offs like The Penguin from Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Dune: Prophecy from Denis Villeneuve’s films have already hit HBO Max. Additionally, a new series adaptation of the Harry Potter saga is in the works. This strategy mirrors Disney’s approach in growing franchises like the MCU and Star Wars.
The upcoming film will delve into the history of the Targaryen dynasty, focusing on the Targaryen conquest of Westeros 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. The movie is expected to feature Aegon I Targaryen and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys conquering six kingdoms with iconic dragons like Balerion and Vhagar.
When can we expect the premiere of Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest?
With no existing script, fans of George Martin’s universe will need to exercise patience as the movie won’t be hitting cinemas anytime soon. The script is likely to progress over the next few months, with pre-production, shooting, and post-production taking up significant time. As a result, the earliest possible release date for the movie is pegged at the beginning of 2028.
What could the plot of Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest entail?
The film will revisit the Targaryen dynasty’s history, specifically focusing on the conquest of Westeros by Aegon I Targaryen, 200 years before the Doom of Valyria. Aegon, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, successfully conquered the Seven Kingdoms, with Dorne being the only exception. The movie will narrate this historic conquest that reshaped Westeros forever, complete with epic dragon battles involving dragons like Balerion The Black Dread and Vhagar.
Who could be cast in Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest?
While casting details are yet to be revealed, the three main characters expected in the film are:
Aegon the Conqueror
Aegon, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms, renowned for riding the colossal dragon Balerion the Black Dread, will be a central figure in the movie. Actors like Henry Cavill and Alexander Skarsgård have been fan-cast for the role due to their experience in fantasy projects.
Another potential contender is Theo James, known for his roles in The White Lotus and The Gentlemen series.
Visenya Targaryen
Visenya, Aegon’s elder sister and wife, known for her prowess in battle, will be portrayed as a fierce warrior and queen in the film.
Visenya rode the dragon Vhagar and wielded a Valyrian steel sword named Dark Sister. She played a significant role in the conquest of Westeros and ruled alongside her siblings after its completion.
Rhaenys Targaryen
Rhaenys, Aegon’s younger sister and wife, known for her beauty and kindness, will also feature prominently in the movie. She rode the dragon Meraxes and participated in Aegon’s conquest, particularly focusing on vanquishing Dorne.
After the invasion, she ruled alongside her siblings, displaying a playful and graceful demeanor.
Beau Willimon to Pen the Screenplay for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest
The screenplay for the film will be written by Beau Willimon, recognized for his work on Netflix’s House of Cards and Star Wars: Andor.
Exploring Potential Future Films in the Game of Thrones Universe
The Further Adventures of Jon Snow
While the planned Game of Thrones spin-off series titled Snow was scrapped, there is potential for it to be revived as a feature film. The movie could explore Jon Snow’s post-series journey and provide closure to fans who were dissatisfied with his character arc in the final season.
The Origin Story of the White Walkers
Another potential film idea is to delve into the origin story of the White Walkers, set in the Age of Heroes thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. This film could provide a deeper understanding of the lore surrounding the White Walkers and the Long Night.
The Further Adventures of Arya Stark
A film focusing on Arya Stark’s exploration of the world west of Westeros could expand the Game of Thrones universe. Arya’s adventures could introduce viewers to unexplored continents like Ulthos and Sothoryos, offering fresh storytelling opportunities.
Game of Thrones Season 8 Remake
While highly unlikely, a remake of Game of Thrones’ eighth season as a feature film could potentially address the dissatisfaction among fans with the original series finale. The idea of a film remake was initially considered by the showrunners before the final season aired.
With numerous possibilities for future films in the Game of Thrones universe, Warner Bros is poised to continue exploring and expanding the rich tapestry of George R. R. Martin’s creation.
