Denza Z9 GT: Plug-in hybrid power could join 850kW tri-motor EV in Australia

The Denza Z9 GT is set to make its debut in Australia later this year, showcasing a striking shooting brake design and an impressive 850kW tri-motor electric powertrain. There are also talks of a potential plug-in hybrid variant joining the lineup.

Recently unveiled at the Melbourne motor show, the Z9 GT is expected to hit Australian showrooms with an updated version of the show car before deliveries commence in September 2026. This model will offer seating for five, a departure from the four-seat configuration seen on the show car, and will feature a tri-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain.

While pricing details for the new Denza have yet to be disclosed, it will join the existing B5 and B8 plug-in hybrid off-roaders and the D9 electric people mover in local showrooms.

Denza Australia has confirmed that the Z9 GT will initially be launched as an electric vehicle (EV), with the possibility of introducing a hybrid version later on. Mark Harland, COO of Denza Australia and New Zealand, mentioned that the decision to focus on the EV first was influenced by the availability of Flash Charging technology, which was not accessible in previous years.

The Z9 GT PHEV variant boasts a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, three electric motors, and a 63.8kWh battery pack, offering a range of 400km on the CLTC cycle.

The introduction of Flash Charging, powered by the upgraded ‘Blade 2’ battery, allows for rapid charging speeds of up to 1500kW, enabling the Z9 GT to charge from 10 to 97 percent of its claimed 820km range in just nine minutes.

Denza is also rolling out its own Flash Charger network in Australia, with plans to install the first three chargers at Denza dealers in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide by the end of 2026. Future phases will expand the network to BYD dealers and other EV drivers, with partnerships in the works to further enhance fast charging infrastructure.

With the growing emphasis on fast charging capabilities and the expansion of public EV charging infrastructure in Australia, Denza is confident in leading with the new battery technology to attract customers and build a strong order bank.

The move towards Flash Charging aligns with the broader trend in the EV market, with companies like Tesla and Zeekr also focusing on rapid charging solutions. The Australian government’s commitment to expanding public EV charging further supports the transition towards electric mobility in the country.

As Denza prepares to introduce the Z9 GT to the Australian market, the emphasis on cutting-edge technology and fast charging capabilities positions the brand as a leader in the evolving electric vehicle landscape.
