Mercedes-Benz Unveils Major Updates for 2027 EQS Sedan

When news broke about Mercedes-Benz’s plans to revamp its flagship EQS sedan for 2027, expectations were low. However, the German automaker has proven skeptics wrong with a slew of significant upgrades that position the EQS as a formidable contender in the luxury electric vehicle market.

While the exterior of the new EQS may not look drastically different from its predecessor at first glance, a closer inspection reveals substantial improvements under the hood. Mercedes has implemented an 800-volt charging architecture, allowing the EQS to leverage high-power charging capabilities from 350-kW DC fast chargers.

Furthermore, Mercedes has enhanced the battery cells’ chemistry to increase power density, resulting in a usable capacity of 122 kWh and an estimated EPA range of up to 425 miles. These advancements place the EQS in direct competition with other luxury EVs like the Lucid Air and BMW i7.

Under the hood, Mercedes has introduced a new powertrain featuring in-house built electric motors. The rear motor now comes paired with a two-speed transmission, offering improved efficiency at different driving speeds. On 4Matic all-wheel-drive models, the front motor can declutch itself when not in use to conserve energy.

One of the standout features of the new EQS is its regenerative braking system, which can capture an impressive 385 kW of power while decelerating. This capability allows for seamless energy recovery during typical driving scenarios.

In a departure from traditional steering systems, Mercedes is offering an optional steer-by-wire yoke for the EQS. This innovative joystick features a variable steering ratio, making steering adjustments more efficient and ergonomic for drivers.

Inside the cabin, Mercedes has not overlooked the comfort and technology features that customers expect. The Airmatic suspension now utilizes Cloud-based Car-to-X data to anticipate road conditions, while the MB.OS infotainment system offers near-instantaneous app access. Rear passengers benefit from larger screens, and front seatbelts are equipped with heating elements for added comfort.

The updated EQS lineup, including the EQS450+, EQS500 4Matic, and EQS580 4Matic models, is set to launch later this year. While pricing details are yet to be confirmed, the next-generation technology and enhancements suggest a slight increase in starting prices, estimated around $102,000 MSRP.
