The Future of Luxury: BMW’s i5 Electric Sedan Unveiled in India

India stands out as a unique market where BMW offers the same car with varying wheelbases to cater to diverse customer preferences. While some may appreciate the added roominess of a long-wheelbase model, others may find the changes in proportions and weight less appealing. Despite the advantages of choice, this strategy remains an exception rather than the norm in the automotive industry.

BMW’s local production of the i5 eDrive 35L at the Chennai factory signifies a significant milestone for the brand, with the iX1 being the first electric vehicle produced in India. In contrast, the i5 M60 with a standard wheelbase is imported. The locally assembled electric 5 Series is expected to offer a more affordable alternative to the imported M Performance model due to lower taxes.

Celebrating the “Made in India” label, BMW launches the First Edition of the i5, featuring exclusive Carbon Black Metallic paint with Titanium Bronze accents. The interior boasts luxurious details such as Individual Silver Bronze inlay, open-pore fine-wood trim, and a rear passenger tablet holder. The dashboard proudly displays the laser-engraved First Edition designation.

Embracing Luxury and Innovation

The i5 Long Wheelbase stands out as the largest sedan in its class, offering impressive dimensions of 5,175 mm in length, 2,156 mm in width, and 1,520 mm in height. Its spacious cabin, reminiscent of the 7 Series, provides unparalleled comfort for passengers.

Equipped with a 268 hp electric motor powering the rear axle, the i5 Long Wheelbase accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.7 seconds. With an 81.6-kWh battery offering a range of 416 miles on the Modified Indian Driving Cycle, the locally produced model features adaptive rear-axle suspension and increased ground clearance for optimal performance on Indian roads.

For customers preferring traditional combustion engines, BMW continues to offer the 530Li M Sport variant of the 5 Series Long Wheelbase, manufactured in India and priced at ₹76,60,000.

Looking ahead to 2027, BMW plans to revolutionize the 5 Series lineup with the Neue Klasse design and technology, introducing a refreshed aesthetic and advanced features such as the iDrive X interface. These enhancements are expected to extend to the Long Wheelbase 5 Series and i5 in 2028, emphasizing BMW’s commitment to innovation and luxury in the electric vehicle segment.
